Mensans and friends are invited to DVM’s annual Pern potluck feast on Saturday, July 12, 2024. The feast is a potluck, but it’s not a buffet. Hors d’oeuvres will be available at 1:00 p.m.; the feast itself will be served promptly at 1:45 p.m. The menu will feature foods of Pern (from the Dragonriders of Pern books by Anne McCaffrey).
Pernese cuisine includes (but is not limited to) cheeses, meatrolls, river grains (rice), breads, assorted fruits and vegetables, cider, beer, and wine. Recipes for some Pernese specialties—Hearty Herdbeast Stew, Bubbly Berry Pies, Benden Baklava, and (of course) Klah—are available upon request.
Besides providing an opportunity to savor Pernese food and drink in good company, the feast is an event where you can show off your dragons, if you like. Dragons on T-shirts, dragon jewelry, dragon statuettes, and more will be on display. (However, if you don’t have any dragon gear, don’t let that keep you away!)
The Dragonriders of Pern fantasy board game will be available for those who would like to play it after dessert.
R.S.V.P. by Wednesday, July 9, 2025, so that we can both select the right size of wherry or herdbeast to roast, and include a place setting for you at the table. (Due to logistical constraints, the maximum headcount is 25.) To accept this invitation, call 215-898-5029 and leave a private VoiceMail message for Lori Ratajczak. Let her know who will come, whether you have any special dietary needs, and what food or drink you’ll bring. (If the weather allows, the feast will be held outdoors. In that case, you might want to bring sunscreen and insect repellent as well.)
>p>The feast will be held at the Hold of Joy Gómez-Farrow and Dan Farrow. Call Joy or Dan at home (610-521-6701) for directions. Ample on-street dragon and runnerbeast parking is available. The Hold can also be reached by public transportation (the 114 SEPTA bus line or the Wilmington/Newark SEPTA train line). Weyrlings (babies and youngsters) are welcome! Allergy alerts: (1) a Devon Rex cat roams the interior of the Hold (some who are allergic to cats can tolerate a Devon Rex, but some cannot); (2) the denizens of this Hold don’t smoke, and ask that you don’t, either. (Besides–tobacco, like honey, isn’t available on Pern.)
